High End 28nm Video cards to arrive in Mid 2012

Although the 28nm based graphics cards are first due out in early 2012 from AMD and Nvidia the high end variants will take a lot longer than that. In fact they are coined for release in around 6-8 months from now for both AMD and Nvidia since apparently TSMC is having some trouble producing the high performance 28nm chips because:

  • Yields are too low.
  • There is high wastage.
  • There are complications involved with packing in more shaders and cores into the 28nm process.

The news means although enthusiasts will not see GTX 500 series and HD 6900 series replacements until mid 2012 there will still be mainstream and notebook releases between then for the mass market. However, for AMD and Nvidia this is not such a bad thing since they can fully exploit the commercial value of the current generation before introducing the next generation as there is still notably high demand for AMDs HD 6000 series and Nvidia’s 500 series. Nvidia also plans to start mobile production of 28nm Kepler chips by December whilst AMD has already commenced its production and is in the final stages of testing.
