105″ Curved 4K TV’s To Be The Flagship Battleground At CES 2014

The race is on to create gadgets that nearly no one can actually afford to buy, with LG and Samsung locked in a head to head battle to be the first company to launch the first 105-inch curved TV. Curved OLED displays were some of the most incredible things at CES 2013 and while the concept of a curved display may sound strange, the end result from a viewers perspective is nothing short of incredible.

The LG curved Ultra HD TV features an 11 million pixel display at a resolution of 5120 x 2160. You don’t need me to tell you that huge and incredibly impressive, if you haven’t seen a UHD display yet, the difference between 1080 and 4K is a bigger leap than that of SD to HD. While Samsung have opted for OLED panels, LG are using a new TFT LCD technology which they say will offer better structural integrity, as well as uniform colour and brightness.

Samsung are claiming to have a new proprietary picture quality algorithm” which offers optimised colours and an even greater feeling of depth, with images twice as vivid as those of previous Ultra HD models. If Samsung’s claims are true that is an impressive feat given that their models at last years CES were best in show.

“We are happy to unveil the 105-inch Curved UHD TV, the culmination of Samsung’s advancements, following the world’s first Curved UHD TV at IFA 2013,” said HS Kim, executive vice president of Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics. “You will experience a true curved TV optimised for consumer viewing environments at CES 2014.”

“We’re proud to reveal our 105-inch curved Ultra HD TV at the world’s largest technology event,” said In-kyu Lee, Vice President and head of the Home Entertainment Company’s TV division at LG Electronics. “Claiming the world’s first and the world’s largest titles, LG’s 105UB9 employs cutting-edge technology to provide a truly unique viewing experience.”

Much like the flag ship products of the computer industry these sets are incredibly expensive and you can expect prices in the region of 8000-10000USD, while the technology behind them will eventually filter down to consumer grade tech over the next couple of years.

Both companies will be displaying their models at CES 2014 and you can bet eTeknix will be dropping by their booth to check them out, but one thing is for certain, 2014 is going to be the year that 4K really takes off.
