The 1MORE Spearhead VRX Gaming Headset is launching today with an MSRP of $199.99 in the US, £189.99 in the UK, and 209.99 EUR in the rest of Europe. That’s not exactly cheap, but this isn’t exactly a standard quality gaming headset. It’s a set of audiophile grade headphones with some fancy features tagged on to appeal to the needs of gamers, making it pretty fantastic value for money.
I continue to be blown away by what 1MORE create, and the VRX is certainly no exception to it. In terms of comparison, there’s really no other gaming headset I’ve tried that sounds quite like this one, and that’s very hard to explain indeed. The sound quality, the build quality, the extra features, all combine in a way that makes the VRX feel like the next evolution for this kind of product – they’re that good.
The drivers on this headset have a very strange quality indeed. We’ve all tried them on and agree on this in the office. You put them on, they sound weak and hollow, like you can hear a spring in the headset. The sound is the same, it has a bright and hollow sound to it at first. After a few seconds, you realise the sound is blindingly clear and the drivers sound like they’re not on your ears, but just everywhere. Then when you’ve settled down on your ears for about 30 seconds, it’s like the power and bass settle down and really gets its wow factor back. It’s like watching the trailers in the cinema, then the THX intro plays. It’s pretty amazing, to be honest.
Motion tracking headphones sound stupid, I’ll be the first to say it. The “gimmick” sounded like it would be just that. However, I’ll eat my own flipping hat at this point, because to actually test this feature was a “why the hell isn’t everyone else doing this!” type moment. It adds a sense of true 3D sound localisation between you and the screen, something you would get sitting in your home cinema or a theatre. The sound always comes from where it’s meant to, regardless of your head movements. This is amazing for movies, but it’s truly staggering for gaming and VR.
1MORE continue to impress here also, with premium build quality materials. The headset is strong, light, and incredibly comfortable. The connectivity is great, working on PC, as well as mobile devices and consoles. However, you’ll only get the surround feature on PC, but that’s not uncommon for this kind of product. Sure, you pay a bit more for this headset, but no more so than other flagship audiophile headphones, and now we’re seeing this kind of performance hitting a gaming headset. Not only that, but 1MORE add some innovations of their own, ones that actually work, making this one of the best and most interesting headsets we’ve tested in a long time.
