LG is set to showcase their latest Gram notebooks at CES 2018. As the name suggests, these are lightweight models that boast high-efficiency. This is made possible with Intel’s latest 8th generation “Coffee Lake” CPUs inside.
“We’re very proud to introduce the new gram PCs, which have been designed in direct response to those wishing to get an all-round, high performance laptop with maximum portability,” said Chang Ik-hwan, head of LG’s IT business division.
Under the scale, the 13.3- and 14-inch laptops (models 13Z980 and 14Z980) weigh just 965 and 995 grams respectively. Meanwhile, the largest 15.6-inch version (model 15Z950) weighs in at 1,095 grams.
Normally lightweight means fragile and delicate when it comes to PC hardware. However, these LG Gram notebooks are durable enough to use even in the most extreme environments. It passes seven stringent U.S. military MIL-STD 810G durability tests for resistance to impact, pressure and temperature.
This is made possible with the use of Nano Carbon Magnesium full metal alloy on the body. This material is typically for aerospace applications since they are durable and lightweight.
Despite the ultra-thin design, these LG Gram laptops pack 72Wh batteries which last a lot longer than most.Using the 2014 MobileMark criteria, the 13.3-inch model can last up to 22.5 hours. That is practically a whole day’s worth with only an hour and a half for sleep. The larger 14-inch and 15.6-inch models lasts up to 21.5 and 19 hours respectively as well. This should provide some peace of mind in case you forget to charge it the night before. As it still has more than half in the tank after a typical 8-hour work day.
LG also uses larger IPS screens on the new line. The 14-inch model for example has the same size body as a 13-inch laptop. However, its screen is 14-inches due to having minimal bezels.
Users can choose between running an i5 or an i7 8th gen Intel processor. There are also two SSD slot options, providing users an option to upgrade with extra storage later on. This kind of upgrade flexibility is unheard of in the world of ultrabooks.
These notebooks also support Thunderbolt 3, allowing for compatibility with Mac products and provide flexible high-bandwidth connectivity. Users can hook up a 4K display or transfer data eight times faster than UBS 3.1 Gen2 Type-C.
LG’s latest gram laptops will be available in the U.S. market starting next month. Other markets to follow soon thereafter. Visitors to CES can see the new features of the 2018 LG gram for themselves at booth #11100 in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. No pricing details are available at this time.
