32GB RAM modules enter production

The Samsung corporation has today announced that it will be the first Computer Hardware firm to mass produce 32GB 1.35v DDR3 RAM modules for what it describes as “Green Server Use”. Samsung has said these modules are being developed in order to support the new cloud computing servers. These RAM chips are based on 30nm architecture as opposed to most mainstream DDR3 RAM modules which are normally 40 or 50nm meaning it is possible to fit more capacity on each module, as shown by the large sizes.

Samsung has also added it will be pressing forward with a new 20nm manufacturing process in the later parts of this year which will bring even more energy efficient and even bigger RAM modules than we have ever seen before. The 30nm chips apparently bring 50% increased productivity than previous 40nm DDR3 modules so market uptake will be significant.

The 32GB registered DDR3 Dimm module runs at 1.35v and transfers 1866mbps up from the 1333mbps at 1.5v from the 40nm modules. Samsung predicted that 10% or more of its production in 2012 would be of 4GB or higher modules as memory densities start to increase.
