The Corning Gorilla Glass is known for its scratch-resistant properties, and can be found on displays spanning from smartphones, to tablets, laptops and so on. It is reported that Corning announced a new type of Gorilla Glass, called 3D-shaped Gorilla Glass, destined for the next wave of handsets and smartwatches with curved displays.
3D Gorilla Glass is called so because of a new manufacturing process that can make the glass into unique shapes, without losing any scratch-resistant properties or gaining thickness. With the future looking like it’ll be filled with curved displays, the ability to protect them with Gorilla Glass is an important step.
The new process from Corning is in partnership with G-Tech Optoelectronics Corporation (GTOC), which allows Corning to produce everything from flat to curved pieces of glass under the one roof. This may not matter much for consumers, but it means Corning can produce different glass products faster and with reduced logistical complexity.
Gorilla Glass, currently in its third revision, is the standard glass used in most smartphones, designed to be extremely scratch resistant and shatter-proof. It’s not without its flaws, due to the nature of glass itself, but generally speaking it does a great job at keeping your phone scratch-free, even if you attempt to damage it with keys or a knife.
