3DMark Release Shots From Ray Tracing Benchmark Tool

3DMark is, perhaps, one of the most popular benchmarking tools. Used by people wishing to test just how good their system is it has proven very popular with both professional testers and the general PC community. The Firestrike benchmarking tool, within 3DMark, is widely used. We here at eTeknix regularly use it in all of our graphics card and system tests. At the moment though, there isn’t a great deal out there that specifically looks to test the ray tracing technology within the new Nvidia RTX graphics cards.

Well, that is about to change! In a report via DSOGaming, 3DMark has released the first screenshots from a planned ‘ray tracing’ benchmarking tool they plan to add to the software.

Benchmarks!

With ray tracing offering real-time light rendering, as above, the tools that can effectively test this more stringently on a graphics card are a bit limited. As such, it’s great news to hear that particularly with the further expansion of ray tracing technology coming in the next few years, that we’ll have a tool to gauge just how far this has (or will) come.

3DMark Port Royal

The benchmark, known as ‘Port Royal’ is still currently in development. It is, however, expected to be added to the ‘roster’ on 3DMark this January. It has been developed in conjunction with input from both AMD, Intel and Nvidia. With this in mind it will hopefully provide the ‘gold standard’ for ray tracing benchmarking for years to come.

What do you think? Is this a good addition? Do you have a ray tracing graphics card? – Let us know in the comments!
