Over 44% of Streamed Videos Are on a Mobile Device

A report conducted by research firm Ooyala has charted the dramatic growth of mobile video playback which accounted for over 44% in Q2 2015. According to current trends, more than half of videos played will be on mobile devices by the end of this year. This marks a staggering 74% increase year-on-year and illustrates the changing nature of consumer viewing habits. However, Ooyala admitted that the growth rate will hit a peak point and progress at a much-reduced rate. The research paper specifically said:

“The second quarter saw mobile video plays exceed 44%, up 74% from a year ago and up a whopping 844% since Q2 2012. By the end of 2015, we expect mobile to account for more than 50% of all video plays.”

Additionally, the company divulged intriguing statistics regarding video lengths. Videos lasting 10 minutes or more was viewed most on tablets with a figure of 57%. Connected TVs achieved a similar rate of 53% and desktop viewing trailed behind with 40%. Unsurprisingly, mobile handsets are mainly used to watch short-format videos and access quick forms of entertainment.

The rise of community video and YouTube has dramatically altered what we watch and how we watch certain programming. Tablets can easily connect to apps and stream content in up to 4K video on Amazon Instant Video. Furthermore, consumers can now leisurely browse a huge library of programming without having to leave the armchair. Clearly, media is changing, and the desktop is not longer the optimal way to watch online videos.
