4K Tablets Expected By The End Of 2013

Tablet displays are evolving very quickly, managing to move comfortably from 1280 by 720 (Nexus 7) to 1920 by 1080 (Xperia Tablet Z) to 2048 by 1536 (iPad 4 Retina) even to 2560 by 1600 if we look at Google’s latest Nexus 10 tablet. This accelerating trend towards higher resolution displays is something we are seeing all smartphone and tablet manufacturers get involved with. The bigger the resolution of the display the more bragging rights and marketing power they are going to have against their competitors.

Despite it taking more or less 5-6 years to become a standard on the PC and TVs, 1080p is now relatively common on tablets and smartphones, emerging in a couple of years. Now it seems that the tablet platform will launch into the lead opting for the 3840 by 2160 4K displays well before the PC and TV platforms. In fact anyone who is a PC user out there will know the PC display market has been pathetically slow to innovate and bring prices down with regards to higher resolution displays such as 2560 by 1600 and 2560 by 1440.

Apparently Taiwan based manufacturers will be ready to provide the 4K tablet screens by the end of this year while Sharp is making the 4K displays for laptops and notebooks. Panasonic has been one of the first to show off 4K tablet demonstrations, as the picture above shows, and they are expected to be one of the first companies to come to market with 4K tablets.

Expect pricing to be very high on initial launch but demand for tablets should help bring those 4K prices down. Maybe this will lead to cheaper 4K displays for everyone else and the PC & TV markets?

What are your thoughts on 4K tablets by the end of 2013?
