4K Ultra HD Player Now Available For Sony X900 Series TV’s

There are some early adopters out there for just about every major bit of technology on the market, those who invested in a 4K TV already are not only mega rich (or mega poor from spending all their money on a 4K TV) but also crazy, given that while they may own a TV set that cost thousands of pounds, that features a UHD panel, there is little to no content to watch on it. It takes a monster gaming PC to churn out 4K while gaming, there are no commercially available 4K movies and generally things are still a bit far away in terms of 4K TV broadcasts, so what is the solution?

Well Sony seem to have the answer with their 4K Ultra HD Media Player, effectively a set-top box that comes loaded with 10 4K films and video shorts, including The Amazing Spider-Man, Total Recall (2012) and The Other Guys. The box isn’t cheap of course and will set customers back another $699 for the device, which comes equipped with 2TBs of internal storage to store it’s 4K content, although it can download more from Sony’s Video Unlimited service which will be hosting 4K content later this year.

Sony say that when the systems are in place, they expect 4K films to be purchasable from their store from just $29.99, rentals from $7.99, which in all honestly sounds pretty reasonable given the data rates involved in selling such a large digital file.

The high price and limited content isn’t the only problem with Sony’s 4K content either as it seems the device is only compatible with the X900 range of 4K TVs from Sony. One thing is for certain though, it’s great to see someone taking a step to bringing 4K content into our homes, even if it is very expensive at this time.
