According to a report by Bloomberg, Blizzard Entertainment’s upcoming survival game has been cancelled after around 6 years of development. The game originally announced in 2022 has now been cancelled due to reported engine issues the team behind the game faced. This could also be due the the fact that the announcement is following in the wake of the layoffs of around 1900 employees across Xbox, Activision Blizzard, and ZeniMax divisions within Microsoft.
Unfortunately, we don’t know why the game was cancelled just 2 years after its unofficial announcement, but as mentioned before, this may be due to multiple factors from the development issues, layoffs and the CEO of Blizzard Mike Ybarra stepping down, basically, it’s everything is a mess right now.
The team that was behind this game was named Odyssey. Despite their many setbacks, it was making progress, but couldn’t go any further with all the recent issues. Many of these setbacks were due to Odyssey being made on an in-house engine and the team had hoped that once the Microsoft Blizzard deal went through, they would be able to switch to Unreal Engine, but clearly, this was not the case.
It’s probably a good thing that the game was cancelled while we don’t know much of anything about it, so there was next to no hype or knowledge around it to miss out on. I would say that it was for nothing, but there is always a possibility that they might return to the game at a later date, especially considering that they spent 6 years on it, there must be something left over they can use!
