HDTV is now the standard for many, and the growth of 4K displays in the home entertainment market is certainly promising too as prices hit consumer-friendly levels earlier this year. So what’s next on the horizon? You would think that it would be 8K, but given that until now the cheapest set is the $133,000 Sharp 8K TV, which clocks in at 85″ and supports a resolution for which there is no generally consumable content on the market, you would have to be completely and utterly bonkers to even consider it.
However, crazy prices and no content won’t stop innovation, as 4K and even HD have gone through a similar progression in their earliest days. Now Changhong, a Chinese consumer brand has decided to steal some thunder from Sharp with the release of a $55,000 8K TV, less than half the price of the Sharp display!
$55,000 isn’t exactly a bargain by any measure, but you do get a lot of high-end features in return, obviously. You’ll get an OLED display, a staggering 7680 x 4320 display resolution, HDR, Dolby Digital Plus, Android OS and more.
Still, another $50K needs to come off that price, at least, and we need content to watch in 8K, just don’t expect any of that to happen for many years.
