This week Swedish tech company MuchDifferent demonstrated the power of their scalable PikkoServer software.
“The defining feature of the PikkoServer software is the ability to allow an online game to handle a vast number of players in the same location in a virtual world. The number of players you can see in one battlefield or in one city square is only limited by the client’s capabilities. Our server side software product makes it possible to develop high player density games on existing game engines, increasing their scale and offering vast new possibilities.”
They played host a browser based online FPS game of their own creation called “Man vs Machine”, peaking at 999 players, just one short of there 1000 player target. All the players in the game can see each other in one big open battlefield, OK so it’s no exactly Battlefield 3 style game play on show here, but the technology behind it has staggering implications for the online gaming community. Let hope this technology keeps making strong progress.
