A Complete Guide to RTX Remix Games
Peter Donnell / 10 months ago
The Open Beta for NVIDIA RTX Remix kicks off on January 22nd, but for whatever some modders are already ahead of the curve thanks to the release of the RTX Remix Runtime which was released back in April 2023. If we’re already seeing this quality of work before the official release, then next month is going to be pretty lit for the modding community.
What is RTX Remix?
The RTX Remix Creator Tool allows you to mod older games which use the DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 API with something called fixed-function pipelines. Think of it like a graphics injector that can overlay and replace objects, textures, lighting elements and more. While modders can already do this, it’s possible to work on games more easily and quickly, as you’re not actually changing the game, you’re basically capturing and editing stuff on the fly… think of it like GameShark for graphics.
We’ve already had an incredible demo in Morrowind, check it out below!
Half-Life 2 RTX Remix!
And of course, Portal, which can now be played with Ray Tracing!
We put the new-ish Portal RTX through its paces on 18 popular graphics cards, which you can check out below!
What Can Remix Do?
With RTX Remix, it’s possible to inject features such as ray tracing, Nvidia DLSS, and Nvidia Reflex, and to add upgraded assets using PBR assets, which use physically-based rendering, meaning materials and surfaces react more realistically with features like ray tracing. Furthermore, there’s the AI cools, where modders can effectively select an asset or texture and enhance it using AI with just a few clicks.

What’s Next?
A lot more, that’s for sure, even with this list here, which I tried to make as comprehensive as possible is only scraping the surface of the little projects and demos that have been published on YouTube, Twitter and there’s a wealth of community stuff going on in various modding discords too. But if this is what people are doing with the nearly year-old API, and the tools not releasing till later this month, imagine what’s going to happen when the final tools hit the internet. Take an old game, tinker with it for a bit, add new textures, upscale the assets, add full path tracing, and unleash it to the masses. Honestly, if you’re a fan of older games, 2024 is going to be something really special.
