A new Anti-Aliasing algorithm to come with Nvidia’s Kepler?

A couple days from now and Nvidia will finally reveal its first Kepler graphics card, the GeForce GTX 680, yet leaks are still flowing. The latest one rumours the possibility for Nvidia to have integrated a new anti-aliasing (AA) algorithm into the Kepler GPUs.

Now, starting from the beginning, anti-aliasing does come in a wide variety, one example being FXAA, which allows for higher levels of image quality while not being as demanding from the GPU as MSAA. This leaves one area in which there could be improvement; offering even better image quality with a lower demand in performance. The screenshot above is rumoured to be from no other than Nvidia’s GeForce Kepler press-deck which shows the new algorithm being compared to 8x MSAA, giving superior image quality.

Now, 8x MSAA is not easy for a GPU and it definitely creates a big drag in performance, and even though the new anti-aliasing method shown in the pictures does look even more demanding, there could also be the possibility for Nvidia to have worked some type of magic and created an AA that wouldn’t drag the GPU’s performance as much as MSAA. After all, amongst the latest rumours that emerged, the GTX 680 is said to offer amazing performances while running Battlefield 3 with AA turned on.
