ADATA is announcing the new ED600, an external drive enclosure boasting rugged durability and an IP54 rating. The “IP” in IP54 stands for Ingress Protection, with the first number correlating to the dust protection level and the second for water protection. The first digit goes up to 6, while the second goes up to 9. In the ADATA E600’s case, it means that it offers dust protection and water splashes. It even has the rugged looks down pat. The outside of enclosure is a very thick textured plastic, with a brushed aluminium ADATA logo plate at the center.
Rugged Tool-Free Drive Installation
Drive installation is quite simple. Simply pop open the enclosure then slide the 2.5-inch drive inside. It supports both 7mm and 9mm drives with a SATA interface. An SSD can survive inside shock-protected up to 100cm drops. That means you can mistakenly dislodge it off a desk while plugged in and it will continue working. If the cable did not come off then your file transfers would continue.
It also uses a USB 3.1 interface to connect to a Windows PC or MAC. However, do not expect Gen2 10Gb/s speeds. Which is fine considering single SATA drives are not enough to saturate the 5Gb/s bandwidth anyway.
