ADATA XPG Storm Adds Active Cooling and RGB to M.2 SSDs

ADATA is adding one more M.2 SSD product to their line right before CES 2018. This time however, it is not actually a drive. Instead it is an M.2 heatsink with active cooling as well as RGB LEDs. ADATA calls it the XPG Storm, presumably because of the 60mm fan which spins at 16500RPM. Although, ADATA did not reveal how loud this fan can get, it is a safe bet that it is loud. That is often the case when manufacturers don’t put the sound level of the fan in the spec sheet.

It uses an M.2 2280 form factor, but it is thicker than other M.2 drives due to the heatsink. It measures 24mm tall but it remains 22mm wide and 81.4mm long. With this heatsink, ADATA promises at least a 25% temperature drop over bare drive setups.

RGB LED Lighting

Unlike most current generation RGB LED DRAM, the XPG Storm does not draw power from the slot. It uses the old-school style of using cables instead. Users can either power it with the power supply directly or via an available fan header. It also needs plugging in to the RGB LED motherboard header so that it can synchronize with the system. The XPG Storm officially supports ASUS Aura Sync, Gigabyte RGB Fusion, and MSI Mystic Light Sync.
