The Playa Slim may be slim, but it’s not quite as small as you might expect. The whole thing is quite long, and reminds me of something like a chunky DVD player in terms of size. It measures 112 x 300 x 420mm (W x H x D). So yeah, pretty slim, but certainly not tiny for what it is. What does matter though is how you can mount it, either on its side like this or flat. There are rubber feet and wider support legs included to do either. We’ll see those shortly.
Down the left side, there’s some basic ventilation for extra airflow. This is located near where the GPU and CPU coolers would be, so that’s pretty important. No dust filter though, but it’s hardly a deal breaker here. Towards the front, you’ll find two USB 3.0 ports, as well as audio jacks; perfect for your peripherals.
The front panel has a matte grey plastic finish. However, the bottom left corner is more glossy. This part opens up, revealing one of the front-loading storage bays. This can be swapped out for a 5.25″ drive in the front too, should you need one.
Depending on the case orientation, this is either the top or the right side. Here you’ll find an 80mm fan towards the back, which is a good was of seeing just how slim this thing really is!
Towards the front though, there’s a removable cover with a dust filter. This is actually so you can access the PSU mounting area. It only takes an SFX PSU, which are much more compact. However, since the PSU is near the front, you can use the built-in pass-through power cable, which we’ll see in a moment.
The other side panel, or again the bottom panel if you’re laying it flat. There’s more holes here for extra airflow, but this one is to allow the PSU breath due to its mounting location.
Around the back, there’s an I/O cutout for the motherboard, and four slim expansion slots, so don’t expect to fit most high-end GPUs in here.
The top has the power pass-through for the PSU, which is simple enough.
For some reason they’ve got no cover on the top slot at all, but snap-off ones on the other four. They should all be there, as I won’t be using a GPU today and now I have a gap… hmmm. It’ll be fine, it just makes my eye twitch a little.
Finally, we have another 80mm fan mount on the bottom (when mounting vertically) or the left side (when laid flat).
