AI Equipped Harmony ‘Love Robot’ Now Available

A talking ‘love robot’ has been released onto the market for those who want a little interaction from their playmates. God help us all.

The robot is capable of both moving and talking with a variety of emotional responses.

A talking love robot?

Yes, you did not misread the title, unfortunately. While I will not go into the details of what the robot is designed for, it is if nothing else a curiosity because they have decided to add an artificial intelligence to it.

This either represents a step forward in robotics or the absolute rock bottom of the human condition.

Matt McMullen is the chief executive of Abyss Creations who creates the ‘companion’. He is clear that the creation is increasingly being seen as more than just a ‘plaything’.

Speaking to the BBC he has said: “Many people who may buy a RealDoll because it is sexually capable come to realise it is much more than a sex toy,” he said. “It has a presence in their house and they imagine a personality for her. AI gives people the tools to create that personality.”

Why on earth are you reporting on this?!

Like it or not, artificial companions are a reality. Particularly in Japan where robots and personal preferences are quite a complicated matter that’s usually best avoided if you’re a bit prudish. This is, however, a very deliberate effort to marriage an AI into a robot physicality. With the ability for the robot to have a personality, to move and to hold an (albeit) limited conversation. This might not be the Russian Terminator robot, but it is another step towards a mechanical artificial intelligence.

You might be wondering why they aren’t many pictures of this product here. If you think of the products primary function, I’m sure you’ll appreciate the difficulty of finding a picture I can use.

The doll is reportedly capable of being loving, moody or even angry. The writer of this might argue that just getting a human partner would make a lot more sense. Although humans don’t have the off switch I guess.

How much does this cost? (not that I’m interested… honest!)

A basic model costs about $5,000. Presumably, like cars the basic model will not include air conditioning or cruise control. However, if you want one with all the bells and whistles you are looking at a price tag circa $10,000.

While I can not afford this (and you may wish to wash your eyes) I am off to see if my scientist grandfather can get me one from the intergalactic pawn store. WUBBA LUBBA DUB DUB!
