Akasa Baymaster S USB 3.0 Card and Drive Reader Review

Final ThoughtsNow we have taken a look at the performance figures of this drive, which we were fairly impressed with as plugging in a faster drive will result in faster data transfer speeds. That said, there are slightly more overheads on the transfer compared to plugging it in via SATA II.

Moving to the practicality of this drive, while it gives you the HDD/SSD drive reader it does also allow you to read all of the popular types of memory card like all good card readers, whether you use them for your camera, phone, laptop or any other device that uses memory cards. In fact it will read at least 20 different types of memory cards, which certainly means that most cards out there are likely to be compatible. However, I would quite like to see a device like this with a USB 3.0 port on the front as well, after all this Akasa Baymaster is taking up a USB 3.0 slot at the back of my case, so it wouldn’t do any harm to replace it with at least 1 more. While the practicalities of this might not be that easy, it would certainly be quite useful.

The Akasa Baymaster S, does come with two fascias with it (one already fitted), which gives you the option of changing the colour of the front panel, which can be useful, although how many people have an off-white coloured case now a days I’m not too sure.

As this item is priced at an incredibly low £17.99 from Scan.co.uk or $29.99 from Performance PCs it is certainly good value for money, especially in the UK market. While it might not do everything you want, if you are looking for a 2.5″ HDD/SSD drive reader for the front of your computer then this is certainly a good candidate especially with the added compatibility with 20+ different types of memory cards.

Pros

  • Gives fast data transfer for 2.5″ drives
  • Good memory card support
  • Two choices of fascias

Cons

  • Takes up a USB 3.0
  • All 2.5″ drives stick out
