Halo, Starfield, Fable, Gears of War, and many other Xbox-exclusive franchises could potentially arrive on PlayStation and Switch in the future, possibly even on their launch day. This bold idea comes from Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming and head of Xbox.
Spencer recently confirmed Xbox’s intention to bring more exclusives to competing platforms. Titles like Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages are just the beginning of this new strategy.
“I do not see red lines in our portfolio that say ‘thou must not,’” Spencer said during an interview with Bloomberg. He also expressed satisfaction with the sales performance of Xbox exclusives released on PlayStation and Switch.
As for the next Halo, he said it is still too early to make a decision. This suggests that even franchises deeply rooted in Xbox history are not untouchable. It appears Xbox is ready to transition into a more open, third-party-oriented company. This shift would offer clear benefits for its platform owners—such as access to many games on Game Pass—while ensuring there are no real limitations for players on competing platforms.
Currently, Xbox’s approach involves creating first-party games for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and (frequently) Game Pass. Big-budget titles like Starfield, Fable, and Perfect Dark fit this strategy. While some of these games remain exclusive to Xbox platforms, others have already expanded to competitors’ platforms—or are planned to in the future. It remains to be seen how many of these will eventually come to PlayStation and Switch 2, whether as timed exclusives or as day-one releases across all platforms.
Either way, this inclusive strategy is being viewed by the Xbox division as offering more growth potential than engaging in a traditional exclusivity battle.
