Alpenfohn Fohn 120 and 140 WingBoost Fan Reviews

Alpenfohn’s 120 WingBoost fan costs £13.99 and the 140 WingBoost costs £14.99. The first thing that surprises me about this is that the upgrade from the 120mm to 140mm fan costs only £1 extra which is a good deal. Although, relatively speaking we can actually see that Alpenfohn are charging quite a premium for these fans – however, I believe this increased price over many competing products is justified in the extra quality, performance and reduced noise you get.
While the 140 WingBoost delivered somewhat average figures all round – possibly due to testing error or just the way the product is, the 120 WingBoost offered an exceptional balance between performance and noise. Add to that the fact that the WingBoost series of fans from Alpenfohn is made to exceptionally high standards, has a great accessory pack, features PWM support, looks excellent, is made from mainly rubber to avoid vibrations and is still reasonably priced, well it is quite impressive stuff indeed.
All that said though, the absence of screws mounting from the design is strange. You can still try and mount it with screws but in not including screws I can only assume Alpenfohn’s intention was for these fans to be used with cases and some heatsinks that don’t require screw mounts. Therefore, these would make a great set of case fans should you find yourself willing to splash out on what are some “luxurious” fans.
While these fans aren’t particularly cheap and don’t offer mind-boggling levels of performance, they are a breath of fresh air in terms of seeing a manufacturer making some really quite quirky and high quality fans. I really like them and I think they are definitely worthy of our innovation award. German engineering has done well yet again!
