It took a while, but Amazon is finally introducing a Kindle e-Reader that is water-proof. Aptly called the Kindle Oasis, the e-Reader has a larger 7-inch screen and aluminium backing. Users can choose between an 8GB or 32GB Wi-Fi only model. Alternatively, there is also a 32GB 3G + Wi-Fi model. The entire assembly measures 159 mm x 141 mm x 3.4 – 8.3 mm and weighs 194 grams.
Instead of opting for an attachment to extend battery life like with the previous Kindle, the new Oasis has a thicker side. This allows the use of a bigger battery by Amazon, while providing readers with something extra to hold onto while reading. Amazon claims weeks of battery life can be expected.
The new screen feautres the same 300 ppi as the Kindle Paperwhite and Voyage. However, it features 12 LEDs + Adaptive light sensor for a more readable screen. Users can use the touchscreen to torn pages or the dedicted page-turning buttons.
In addition to the physical changes, the Oasis also supports Audible playback. Which means users can enjoy audiobooks while they rest their eyes in between readings.
Users can now pre-order it directly from Amazon starting at £229.99 or $299.99 in the US for the 8GB model. A 32GB model is also available for £259.99. For users who want true portability, a 3G + Wi-FI 32GB version is also available for quite a bit more at £319.99.
A premium leather case accessory cover is also available for . For those with a tighter budget, a water-safe fabric cover is also available for only .
All prices include free shipping and the actual release date is not until October 31.
