Amazon Opens Grocery Store With No Cashiers or Tills

Amazon Go

Amazon, never one to shy away from innovations has just launched its most recent idea onto the public. Opening its doors on Monday, Amazon Go launched its first high street store with the incredible feature that it has no cashiers, queues or tills. Well, there might be a small queue to get in, it is a new store after all.

The shop, which deals primarily in grocery goods opened in Seattle on Monday.

Now, at this point, you might be wondering how the store could possibly operate. Surely people will just go in and rob it blind? Well, the utilization of very clever technology means, apparently, that that cannot happen.

How does it work?

The store in Seattle works in conjunction with the Amazon Go app. Upon entering, users scan their phone linking to the account. From there they can peruse and select goods as they require.

A high number of cameras monitor what people pick up and with their items, people can simply leave. Upon leaving Amazon will bill the users account accordingly.

In a report via The Independent, Amazon has been researching the idea since 2016. It would seem that they are now confident enough in the technology and implementation to roll it out.

So while Amazon might be increasing the price of Prime in the US, shoppers in Seattle can at least check-out the new store.

Presumably, if successful, and I see no reason why it wouldn’t be assuming the technology works, we will likely see many more of these stores to come in the future.

What do you think? A good idea? A novelty concept? – Let us know in the comments!
