Amazon is currently in talks with US mobile phone network providers to provide network plans with its Prime subscription with the possibility of a free inclusion to the $7.49 membership.
The information surrounding this possibility was shared by Bloomberg which states that Amazon is negotiating with Verizon, T-Mobile and Dish to gain the lowest possible wholesale prices offering the possibility of $10 a month or even free wireless plans for its Prime subscribers. These talks have been going on for six to eight weeks but they aren’t close to being completed and could very well be scrapped at any point. If this does go through it could be seen as another incentive for people to keep a Prime subscription and Bloomberg sees it as a method of competing against Walmart’s Walmart+ membership which is offering a lower-cost alternative to the shopping side of Amazon.
Over time I see Amazon condensing so much into their Prime subscription that the company could become so much more than an online superstore. Controlling our networks, our home devices slowly getting closer to CyberPunk’s Arasaka Corporation, how long till they start their own private military? Maybe I’m just being dramatic but this deal could very well undercut other network providers if it proves to work out cheaper alongside the other Prime benefits.
