AMD Advances in CPU Market, Outshines Intel in Desktops and Servers

In the latest competitive twist within the CPU market, AMD has made significant strides against Intel in desktops and servers. This progress is highlighted by a new report from Mercury Research, which shows AMD’s growing market presence in these segments during the first quarter of the year.

AMD’s success stems notably from its 4th-Generation EPYC processors and the Ryzen 8000-series, which have seen substantial adoption among desktop and server manufacturers. The report reveals that AMD’s market share in desktop units climbed to 23.9% in the first quarter of 2024, a notable increase from 19.2% in the same period last year.

Intel Maintains Dominance in Laptop Sector

However, Intel retains its stronghold in the laptop sector, despite AMD’s efforts. This resilience is crucial as laptops continue to be a significant market, with performance and efficiency at the forefront of consumer demands.

In the mobile CPU market, AMD’s shares have seen ups and downs. Although there was an increase in AMD’s unit share to 19.3% in the first quarter of 2024 from 16.2% in the previous year, there was a slight decline from the fourth quarter of 2023. This fluctuation is partly due to Intel’s new releases, which have managed to attract attention back to their products.

AMD’s Strong Performance in Server CPU Market

AMD’s advancements are not just limited to desktops. The server market has also felt AMD’s increasing influence. With a unit share that rose to 23.6% and a revenue share that expanded to 33%, AMD’s server CPUs are making notable inroads, particularly with their 4th-Generation EPYC processors. This growth represents a significant year-over-year increase, highlighting AMD’s strengthening position in data centers.

This ongoing battle between AMD and Intel continues to shape the landscape of the CPU market, with each company strategically pushing to outperform the other across various computing segments.

Ongoing Competition and Future

AMD’s statement emphasized the growing adoption of their server CPUs, driven by increased enterprise and cloud deployments. This competitive dynamic ensures that both companies remain at the forefront of technology innovation, continually adapting to the evolving demands of the computing world.
