Yesterday, Raja Koduri, head of AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group, teased Vega. Vega is meant to follow up on Polaris with the addition of HBM2 and enthusiasts levels of performance. When Raja teased the card yesterday, we expected it meant that Vega would arrive sooner than expected. Now, it turns out we may have still a long wait ahead of us till we see GTX 1080 competition from AMD.
According to Raja, the design team for Vega celebrated a major milestone for Vega 10, the first Vega GPU. The final nail in the coffin came when we learned that Vega is a “long way to go” until we see it. This likely means October is not in the works, though for some of us, three months is a long wait. Of course, there is a chance that Raja is playing coy with us but the October rumors were always a long shot. Still, with Vega progressing along nicely, it won’t be too long until we see Vega 10.
AMD’s roadmaps have pointed to an early 2017 launch or late 2016 so unless we see a killer Polaris chip, the GTX 1080 will remain the performance king for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, the card will bring enough performance to not only compete with the GTX 1080, but also with the GTX 1080 Ti or the next Titan.
