AMD Rolls-Out New Chipset Driver – USB4 Support & 3D V-Cache Update!

With the upcoming release of the new AMD Ryzen 5800X3D set for April 20th, it always seemed likely (if not certain) that AMD would be looking to release a new chipset driver update offering support for its new, and potentially very exciting V-cache technology. With its release still just under two weeks away, however, you would’ve been forgiven for thinking that this update would likely drop a day or two before the processor’s actual release.

Following a report via TechPowerUp, however, although not yet officially available directly via AMD, it would appear that some motherboard manufacturers have already started the update as available to download and install!

AMD Chipset Driver Update

The exact details surrounding this new chipset driver update and exactly what it does in regards to its V-cache enhancements are still more than a little mysterious. Largely because, you know, the AMD 5800X3D hasn’t been released yet. – Similar to what AMD recently did with their recent Adrenalin Super Resolution update, however, the overall feeling is that this will look, wherever possible, to provide some kind of generic support so that all games and applications (and not just those that officially support the technology) should be able to get the best out of it.

What about USB4 though? Well, aside from owners of Ryzen 6000-series laptops, this one doesn’t really have any notable widespread implications… Yet. When taking a look at the hugely better speeds this offers over even USB 3.1 though, good things are definitely on the way!

Where Can I Get My Update?

At the time of writing, it appears that Gigabyte is the only manufacturer currently confirmed to be offering this new chipset driver update. Given the masses of motherboard firms though, it’s entirely possible that there may be a few others out there. – For desktop users though, unless you’re planning to upgrade to the 5800X3D, you shouldn’t feel any need to rush to get this installed. In fact, if you’re not planning to upgrade at all, you might be able to skip this one entirely.

When AMD officially releases this though, we’ll give you an update as to exactly what we’re getting, and more so, if it’s actually worth it!
