AMD confirms 7nm Navi to Follow Vega

AMD is putting on a very strong performance this year. Not only have we just had a successful launch of Ryzen, but now we’re seeing more and more information on their upcoming Vega hardware. As much as you may hear people say “wait for Vega”, AMD are keen to keep pushing ahead. At their live stream, they detailed plans for GPU hardware until 2020.

Vega, Navi, and Beyond!

This year will see the release of the AMD Radeon Vega graphics cards. These are built on a 14nm architecture. They also feature 2nd-gen High Bandwidth Memory, better known as HMB2. We expect to see much more on these cards at Computex 2017 at the end of this month. While we will have new consumer gaming graphics cards, there will also be their professional Frontier Edition cards too.

Navi before 2020!

Amazingly, the next-next-gen Navi graphics cards will be built on a 7nm FinFET design; that’s quite a dramatic drop in terms of manufacturing scale. Of course, what Navi has in store for us remains to be seen. It’s a few years away just now, but we can assume that it would take what AMD has learnt from Vega and fine tune it much further.

AMD are hinting this series will use an unannounced memory technology. This could be HBM3, a new GDDRx, who knows, it’s all speculation at this point.

Next-Gen

Who knows what AMD has in store for 2020 and beyond. I think it’s safe to say faster cards, smaller FinFET designs, and more crazy memory. Let’s enjoy Vega first though, no point rushing ahead.
