AMD Confirms Vega Products Shipping Q2 2017

In addition to the highly anticipated Ryzen release, AMD is also set to release a brand new GPU architecture this year. Vega has been previously confirmed by AMD to launch in the first half of 2017 but no firm timeline was given. According to the company’s latest financial report, they are planning to stick to their schedule. Vega is currently set to ship sometime in Q2 2017.

A shipment date in Q2 2017 means the earliest possible date is mid-April. That because there is usually a lag time of about a month between shipments and when stock reaches retail and is ready for sale. Since AMD has confirmed that they want to do a hard launch going forward, it means at least May until a launch will happen. This goes hand in hand with previous rumors that have pointed to a May launch.

AMD introduced preliminary details of its forthcoming Vega GPU architecture designed to address the most data- and visually-intensive next-generation workloads. Key architecture advancements include a differentiated memory subsystem, next-generation geometry pipeline, new compute engine, and a new pixel engine. GPU products based on the Vega architecture are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2017.

Unfortunately for AMD fans, this means an early Q1 launch of Vega, as unrealistic as it was going to be, is not going to happen. As we’ve noted before, Computex may be the venue AMD is looking for to make their reveal. Either way, it does mean Nvidia will likely set the tone of the launch with the GTX 1080 Ti rumored for a March launch though availability might come later.
