AMD Debunks $900 Price Rumors for Radeon RX 9070 XT GPUs: ‘Never Part of the Plan’

AMD Debunks $900 Price Rumors for Radeon RX 9070 XT GPUs: ‘Never Part of the Plans’

The launch date and pricing for AMD‘s new Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 graphics cards remain surrounded by uncertainty. Despite AMD’s partners and retailers already having stock, a prolonged embargo by the company prevents their sale.

Confusion Over Pricing Plans

A Bulgarian retailer recently attempted to shed light on the situation by showcasing the PowerColor Radeon RX 9070 XT and revealing AMD’s alleged initial pricing plans, adding to the confusion.

Reports suggested AMD originally planned to price the RX 9070 XT closer to the RX 7900 XT than the RX 7800 XT, with prices at $899 for the RX 9070 XT and $749 for the RX 9070. Considering leaked performance data, which positions the RX 9070 XT as only marginally faster than the RX 7900 XT, these prices appeared unusually high.

Frank Azor from AMD had previously clarified that the company aims to compete with NVIDIA’s 70-class cards, implying a price more aligned with the RTX 5070 Ti ($749) and RTX 5070 ($549). Therefore, it seems unlikely AMD would price the RX 9070 XT above $700 and the RX 9070 above $500.

AMD’s Response to Rumors

To reinforce this, Azor recently dismissed the pricing rumors directly. On X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “While we aren’t going to comment on all the price rumors, I can say that an $899 USD starting price point was never part of the plan.”

As of now, AMD has another month to finalize its pricing and specifications for the RDNA 4 GPUs. The competition with NVIDIA is expected to be intense, especially with the impending arrival of NVIDIA’s RTX 50 cards, including the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070.

These developments have reportedly influenced AMD to delay the launch of its GPUs, initially slated for late January, to March. The official reason cited by AMD for the delay involves software optimization, though it’s possible that pricing strategy adjustments are also in play.
