With AMD’s Polaris Tech Day wrapping up, all the public is waiting for is for the NDA to lift and the graphics cards to finally launch. As with all events these days, everyone loves to post pictures about it all over social media. One AMD employee did so and inadvertently spilled a secret. According to a picture posted to Twitter, AMD has a working RX 480 graphics card in the house.
The picture showed a Lenovo Y27F FreeSync display running an OpenGL demo of DOOM at 1440p. From the demo description, the whole thing was running off of an RX 480 GPU. This is likely Polaris 10 given the 1440p resolution. Polaris 10 has long been rumoured to be used for the R9 480 and R9 480X graphics cards and this leak confirms that.
The big surprise is that it’s labelled RX 480 rather than R9 480. There are two possibilities for this. One is that AMD is adding a new RX or R10 tier to their naming scheme and shaking up tradition with Polaris. However, RX would be better reserved for the 490(X) cards and the mobile lineup still maintains the R9. The other scenario is that AMD hasn’t decided yet whether the card will be the R7 480, R9 480 or R something 480 just yet.
Why do think the card is called the RX 480?
