AMD EPYC 7551P 32-Core/64-Thread SP3 Processor Review

Final Thoughts and Pricing

Pricing

At the time of writing, you can get AMD’s EPYC 7551P 32-Core processor for just $2306.18 or £2380.49 on Amazon. That is for the retail package with the CPU. Considering what you get, that’s cheap!

Conclusion

We had a first look at AMD’s EPYC series today and it was a pleasure. What a beast the EPYC 7551P is. Not just with its 32 cores and 64 threads, but also with the 2TB octa-channel RAM support and 128 PCIe lanes. It’s not hard to see what makes it attractive. The SoC design also makes it both effective and easy to deploy. On top of that, you get a low ToC thanks to the effectiveness but also the asking price.

Is the CPU worth the price?

Yes, definitely. No doubt. Sure, it doesn’t perform equally in all aspects but does where it matters. EPYC is designed to handle data centre workloads and it does so well. Single thread operations aren’t important in these scenarios. You’ve seen the numbers and they do all the talking.

Built-In Security Technologies

AMD EPYC-based servers will shield from external and internal threats, but also help keep software and data safe while booting, running, and moving from server to server. The AMD Secure Root-of-Trust technology ensures that only cryptographically signed software boots while AMD Secure Run Technology encrypts all software and data in the memory. AMD Secure Move technology enables secure migration of virtual machines and containers between EPYC-based servers.

Pros

  • 2TB 8-Channel Memory support
  • 32 Cores and 64 Threads
  • 128 PCIe lanes for maximum I/O capabilities
  • Hardware-based security features for data centres.

Cons

  • Lower single-thread performance

“AMD’s EPYC processors take data centre options to a whole new level with maximum I/O abilities, higher memory support, and more cores.”
