AMD Explains Why it Offers Intel CPU In Project Quantum

We love poking a bit of fun when something seems amiss. Lately, our attention has been turned at AMD and the release of the new 300 series and very poor stock levels of the Fury graphics card range. Now we take a closer look at why exactly AMD is offering an Intel CPU in the newly announced Project Quantum SFF Gaming PC.

Our original thoughts were that AMD knew it made some pretty inferior (in comparison) CPU’s and knew Intel held the best chance of unleashing all of the potential power that the twin Fiji graphics processors can offer up; which should be quite a lot if one can almost match an NVIDIA GTX Titan X.

Well AMD has now stepped up and offered an explanation to clear things up:

“We have Quantum designs that feature both AMD and Intel processors, so we can fully address the entire market. I’m sure you’ve heard AMD leaders speak before about how we’re driving growth in the company and our key businesses, and that one of the key strategies we have for doing that is listening to customers.

You may have heard at the recent AMD financial analyst day that Lisa Su described Job #1 as “Build Great Products.” In the case of buyers for systems like Project Quantum, there is a clear preference for choice; they’re not interested in a narrow range of computing solutions – they want to pick and choose the balance of components that they want, that are hand-tailored in a world of off-the-rack-suits.

With a product as compelling as R9 Fury, we are extremely pleased to enable as much success as we can. There is a range of technology options for CPU in Project Quantum… but the real star is Radeon Fury.”

I guess that makes sense, but surely on a huge reveal at E3 you would tout the best graphics card option you have available with the best CPU you have available and then subtly offer competitor options at a later date?
