AMD has been in the spotlight lately, not just with its VEGA graphics cards, but also thanks to its Threadripper CPUs. These CPUs were designed specifically to beat Intel’s most powerful chips, and as far as sales are concerned, it looks like they managed just that. Keep in mind that AMD has been behind Intel in sales for the better part of a decade. Now, thanks to a German website named Mindfactory.de, we have specific data showing how AMD is beating Intel in sales.
The news further strengthens the idea that AMD can go toe-to-toe with Intel even at the enthusiast level. Also, it looks like Intel was not fully prepared for AMD’s return to the market, as the Threadripper 1950X performed exceptionally well. Sources indicate that this chip surpassed Intel’s counterpart by over 45%, which is quite an achievement. In March, when Ryzen came out, Advanced Micro Devices had 27.6% CPU unit share. Threadripper allowed that figure increased to nearly 49% in July, while August meant over 56% share.
The Ryzen 5 1600 is a six-core processor that delivers quite a punch for $220. AMD’s Ryzen 7 1700, Ryzen 5 1600X and Ryzen 7 1700X came in second, third, and fourth in the sales lineup. Intel cleaned up with its i7 7700K, which is still on Amazon’s #1 best seller spot. With the launch of Coffee Lake, Intel has a good chance to make a comeback. Competition can only mean good things for consumers, as it forces companies to lower prices and provide better value. It also pushes them to create more powerful chips from generation to generation, which is always welcomed.
