AMD FSR 4 Now Available for Many Games Thanks to FSR 3.1 Compatibility

AMD has unveiled its much-awaited FSR 4 technology at CES 2025, a new version of its upscaling tool. While the presentation provided limited details, the company highlighted the use of artificial intelligence as a key feature of FSR 4.

Compatibility with FSR 3.1

According to leaks from @Kepler_L2 (thanks VideoCardz), FSR 4 is built upon FSR 3.1, ensuring compatibility with all games currently supporting that version. This is promising for users purchasing AMD’s new RDNA 4 GPUs, as they will likely have access to a wide array of optimized titles from the outset.

The transition from FSR 3.1 to FSR 4 is expected to require minimal developer intervention, involving a simple replacement of DLLs (Dynamic Link Libraries). These DLLs act as containers for functions and resources shared across applications. When a game supporting FSR runs, the operating system loads these DLLs, enabling the game to use FSR’s upscaling functions seamlessly. This ease of implementation could drive rapid adoption of FSR 4, especially as more games integrate FSR 3.1.

FSR 4 will leverage the dedicated AI accelerators in the RX 9070 GPUs to deliver high-quality 4K upscaling, enhance performance with Frame-Gen, and reduce latency using Anti-Lag 2. However, the technology will be exclusive to AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs, meaning only users with these new graphics cards will benefit.

While AMD has not confirmed an official release date, FSR 4 is expected to launch in March 2025, coinciding with the release of the RX 9070 series. It remains to be seen whether FSR 4’s compatibility with FSR 3.1 will result in widespread support from the start and how the technology will impact the competitive GPU market. Some speculate that the release of the RX 9070 GPUs may have been delayed to accommodate the rollout of FSR 4.
