AMD gains ground on Nvidia in Q1 2011

The John Peddie Research firm (JPR) announced figures earlier this week on the state of the GPU market. The figures shown in the table below are about Video Card sales worldwide. These do not include desktop/laptop integrated graphics.

Others 0.42% 0.47% -9.99% 0.85% -50.62%

Interesting to see is although Nvidia still retains a majority market share of 59.12% , AMD gained a significant amount of ground on Nvidia closing the gap of around 30% last year to now about 20%. A similar trend was also shown within the integrated desktop graphics market.

Desktop Integrated Graphics

Since losing a battle with Intel to maintain the rights to produce integrated chipsets for Intel boards the integrated GPU figures are slightly dissappointing for Nvidia but extremely promising for AMD.

AMD gained 3% market share rising to 25%, whilst Nvidia lost a further ground to just 20%. Intel maintains total dominance of the integrated market with a 55% market share which is up 5% from the last quarter.

Laptop Integrated Graphics

Nvidia gained 4% here to AMD (who lost 4%) but it still has only 42% to AMD’s 58%.

Nvidia is at one of the weakest stages it has ever been in the AMD/Nvidia battle, lagging behind in Laptop graphics and losing market share in both other categories AMD are sure to make use of the extra market share. We should expect to see more from Nvidia in the chipset and mobile market as it looks to compete with AMDs new APU fusion technology.

Watch this space, the battle rages on.
