AMD Having Trouble With 6+2 Power Cables In Reference RX 7600 Cards

When NVIDIA decided to go with the new 12VHPWR cables for their GPUs they were met with many issues surrounding them leading AMD to stick with the tried and true PCIe cables. Unfortunately, that has backfired and AMD has somehow managed to bugger that up.

6+2 Power Cables Not Quite Fitting

This issue was spotted by Techpowerup in their recent review of the reference RX 7600 where they discovered the 6+2 PCIe connector wouldn’t go all the way in. This issue only affects the 6+2 cables and not the 8-Pin cables and has been identified as a problem with the design of the backplate. 6+2 power cables feature a plastic lip that clips the 6 and 2 pins together and unfortunately, AMD didn’t take that into account as the backplate extends out too far causing an obstruction for the cable.

Does This Affect Any Other Cables?

IgorsLab also pointed out this issue in their review and it turns out this issue has affected some other cables. It was found that the cables included with NVIDIA’s PCAT, used to measure power, and sleeved modded cables are affected by this design flaw. It’s quite funny how AMD has managed to bugger up something like this, especially with a cable that’s been in use for years. Luckily they may have time to correct it as the reference model cards aren’t going to be on sale right away and are planned for a later release date.

Update:

AMD has released a statement to Techpowerup regarding the issue, confirming that it will be fixed by the time the cards launch.

“We are very pleased with the volume of Radeon RX 7600 cards available globally from our AIB partners. We expect RX 7600 reference design cards to be available over the coming weeks with a design that accommodates all power supply cables.”
