When the first Polaris launch rumours pointed to May, my first thought was that AMD would launch the cards at Computex. Later on, we got word that AMD might be releasing the cards a bit sooner, with an event near the end of May in Macau China. Today, we are getting what might be the closest thing to an official confirmation that AMD will indeed be releasing Polaris during Computex.
According to the source, AMD is sending out invites to attend the Polaris 10 launch at Computex. If Computex is the first public reveal of the Polaris lineup, this suggests that the Macau event will be limited to select press as we’ve suggested. It also means we probably won’t get too much about Polaris and GCN 4.0 from the webinar next week since AMD will want to save all the big juicy details for the big stage.
From the leaked specifications, it looks like AMD has done quite a bit of work on the underlying architecture for their latest GPUs. Clock speeds are expected to take a major leap while power consumption will drop precipitously. Given that the email only mentions Polaris 10, we may be seeing Polaris 11 likely a bit later and with less fanfare. Polaris 10 will be the “flagship” card to launch the new lineup after all.
