AMD Makes Gains in Discrete Graphics Market

AMD’s market share in the discrete sector hasn’t been ideal for a considerable amount of time and raised some questions if they could turn this worrying trend around. Thankfully, the latest Mercury research paper makes for some positive reading and clearly shows a revival by AMD in this very important aspect of their business. The report states that in the first quarter, GPU shipments declined by 10.2 percent compared to the same period last year. During this time, AMD’s market share increased to 29.4 percent which is an excellent result. Not only that, the share points went up by 3.2 which is another very positive showing. More specifically, the company managed to regain 1.8 share points in the discrete desktop market and 7.3 share points in their notebook segment. This now means AMD accounts for 38.7 percent of the discrete notebook sector.

Apparently, this revival is down to increased confidence in the company’s drivers and superb price to performance ratio across the entire R9 series. This makes sense because the dramatic improvements we’ve seen in Crimson is worthy of praise. Not only that, AMD continues to offer driver updates in a relatively quick fashion which bode well for the future. Also, the launch of Polaris 10 and 11 should make a significant difference and allow AMD to strengthen their market position even further.

Is this the start of a major AMD comeback?
