AMD Piledriver production to begin in Q3 2012

AMD’s current generation of processors, the “Bulldozer FX” series is due to be replaced by an updated version using slightly revised architecture. Production of Bulldozer’s successor “Piledriver” is set to commence in Q3 2012 according to some industry sources. Some of the first client processor models based on the “Vishera” silicon, will be the eight-core FX-8350, six-core FX-6300, and quad-core FX-4320.

All Piledriver chips will be based on the current AM3+ platform, meaning compatibility with existing AM3+ supporting motherboards. They will support dual channel DDR3 up to 1866MHz natively and they will feature AMD’s Turbo Core 3.0. The hope from Piledriver is that it will offer large increases in clock-per-clock performance over Bulldozer. The implementation of resonant clock mesh technology (as detailed here) should allow Piledriver to also be more energy efficient than Bulldozer.
