Over the past couple of weeks, various leaks have been coming out about Polaris 12 and Vega 10. Both are reported to be upcoming GPUs from AMD, with Vega 10 being confirmed by AMD for a launch in 2017. Other these few tidbits, more information about the new chips has been scarce. However, some new information has popped up courtesy of RRA. According to the South Korean agency, both Polaris 12 and Vega 10 have passed final certification.
Once a consumer electronics passes this stage, it means no more changes can be made to the final product. It suggests that both Polaris 12 and Vega 10 are now completed products and well out of the design phase. This means that AMD is likely just waiting for production to ramp up to achieve the required supply and for the right time and event to launch the new cards.
MSIP-REM-ATI-102-D04001 or Vega 10 was certified on November 17th. This means that the Vega 10 AMD showed off at New Horizon was likely a the finalized form of the chip. Vega is expected to revamp the GCN architecture with a focus on performance and efficiency, along with the addition of HBM2. Vega 10 will likely do battle against the GTX 1080 and 1070 and is very likely RX 490.
MSIP-REM-ATI-102-C90603 or Polaris 12 was certified on December 9th. Given the later certification, I expect that Polaris 12 will arrive about a month after Vega 10. Less information is known about this chip but it will be from the Polaris lineup with GCN 4. I suspect it will likely either slot in under Polaris 11 or above Polaris 10. Hopefully, we will get more information about this chip soon.
