AMD prepares more price cuts for new Nvidia cards

With Nvidia’s GTX 660 and GTX 650 now on the retail shelves its important for AMD to reassess their pricing appropriately so they still retain the traditional cost advantage over Nvidia GPU solutions.

As a result of AMD’s market analysis and tweaking this new pricing scheme will now be used:

  • Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition – starts at $430
  • Radeon HD 7970 standard – starts at $410
  • Radeon HD 7950 Boost – starts at $300
  • Radeon HD 7950 standard – starts at $290
  • Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition – starts at $240
  • Radeon HD 7850 2 GB – starts at $200

Before these price cuts were put into place the pricing stood at

  • Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition – starts at $499
  • Radeon HD 7970 standard – starts at $429
  • Radeon HD 7950 Boost – starts at $319
  • Radeon HD 7950 standard – starts at $309
  • Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition – starts at $249
  • Radeon HD 7850 2 GB – starts at $209

So as you can see AMD has taken some hefty amounts of its highest end cards, the HD 7970s and HD 7950s have all been cut significantly. Yet the HD 7870 and HD 7850, the cards intended to compete with the GTX 660 and GTX 660Ti, have been all but neglected seeing cuts of only $10. This shows us that AMD is recalibrating the graphics cards to bring the HD 7950 into play more at the mid range, we think the new battle plan from AMD is this:

HD 7970 GHz Edition – GTX 680

HD 7970 standard and HD 7950 boost – GTX 670

HD 7950 boost and HD 7950 – GTX 660Ti

HD 7870 GHz Edition and HD 7850 – GTX 660
