With the release of the latest Ryzen 5000 processors last September, AMD again managed to hit the ball out of the park with its new Zen 3-based processor designs. More importantly, though, they were good enough to give those in the Intel camp even more pause for thought about their brand loyalty. Particularly so given the somewhat lacklustre response seen with the 10th-gen Comet Lake-S line-up. A series which, at best, just about held par with AMD.
Admittedly, since the release, supply levels of the Ryzen 5000 series have been relatively hard to come by. Nowhere near as difficult as graphics cards, but still tricky nonetheless. Following a Twitter post by ‘@patrickschur_‘, however, it would appear that Team Red isn’t ready to sit back on its laurels yet as fresh information suggests that the Ryzen 5000 series might be set to get some new and potentially very exciting additions!
Referred to as a ‘B2 Stepping’, which is basically tech-speak for a revised design, the information suggests that two new AMD processors are currently in development and will be based upon the ‘Vermeer’ design. This would imply that these will be desktop Ryzen 5000 processors, and with that in mind, the only real logical progression we have from here is that we are going to see some ‘XT’ branded models hit the market.
Although no specific names have yet been confirmed, the vast majority of opinion seems to agree that the new top spec 5.0Ghz boost CPU will be the Ryzen 9 5950 XT.
AMD is already on the record to say that they plan to stick with the XT branding for quite some time. Given that we’ve already seen the name used within the Ryzen 3000 series and their Radeon 5000 and 6000 graphics cards. However, it seems to make sense that sooner or later, we will see Ryzen 5000 XT processors announced sooner or later. – Is this our first peek through the curtains, though? Well, just the two models would be relatively surprising, but then again, these might represent their more flagship designs which Team Red does now tend to release earlier than the more entry/mid-tier alternatives.
We will, of course, keep you posted, but all in all, this could be a very interesting development from AMD and, who knows, it might even see them very quickly retake the single-core gaming performance crown from Intel.
