AMD Preparing Ryzen V1000 SoC Against Intel’s Gemini Lake

AMD V1000 SoC is Almost Here

It appears that AMD’s long-awaited next generation embedded R-series SoC line is almost here. Naturally, it features the same AMD Zen CPU Core and is part of the Raven Ridge APU family. This pits it in perfect alignment to take on Intel’s current generation Gemini Lake SoCs. ComputerBase spotted an upcoming mini-ITX board featuring the SoC with a “V1000” name on iBase’s website last week. The product page has now been taken down but not after grabbing a screenshot of course. LinuxGizmos also recently spotted more solutions including a SOM-5871 module from Advantech featuring the same SoC. That product page is still up and can be seen through this link.

Another entry in the catalog includes a 1U rackmount unit using the same SoC. It supports dual-channel DDR4-2400 up to 32GB and has M.2 ports for storage. Aside from these upgrades, it offers USB 3.1 Gen2 10Gbps, Mini PCIe and HDMI 2.0 ports.

Interestingly, this catalogue reveals that the AMD Vega GPU in the SoC has 11 Compute Units and runs at 1500MHz. Vega also brings HEVC encode/decode and VP9 decode support. In addition, the information from LinuxGizmos reveals that the AMD V1000 supports a core/thread of “2/4/8” configurations. It also lists the SoC as having a 1MB or 2MB cache and a TDP of between 12-54W. Moreover, it has an integrated I/O chipset and an SPI-based AMI 64MB BIOS. Specific clock rates so far however are not disclosed. This is pretty much what is expected from the “Great Horned Owl” APU leak from VideoCardz.com minus the Vega GPU change.

While it is not revealed yet whether AMD plans to use these for notebooks, the answer is most likely yes. Primarily since Intel has been using Gemini Lake for low-cost and education-based notebooks.

When are These Coming Out?

They have not been officially announced yet, but it is expected to be unveiled at Embedded World trade show at the end of February 2018.
