AMD R9 480(X) is Polaris 10

After much speculation and leaks, we are finally getting some indication about what Polaris 10 will look like. Earlier in the year, AMD revealed that Polaris would be mainly focused on the mainstream market. This led us to suspect that Polaris 10 would be the R9 480(X) GPU. Now, a new leak is confirming that Polaris 10 will indeed be used for the R9 480, 480X and any other R9 48xx GPU.

At the same time, AMD has promised to address the VR market, meaning at least R9 390X levels of performance. Previous rumours have pointed out that Polaris 10 would perform around the GTX 980Ti. If true, this means AMD will be bringing $650 performance down to below $300 levels based on past pricing. The GTX 1070 on the other hand, is set to bring $650 performance down to around $379/$450.

By positioning Polaris 10 as the R9 480(X), this means we will have room for the R9 490(X) later on, potentially using Vega. There is even a possibility that the R9 480(X) and R9 490(X) will use the same GPU, leaving Vega to replace the Fury series as a flagship product. Either way, we won’t have long to wait till June 1st when AMD will be providing some Polaris updates at Computex.
