While much of the focus has been on Polaris 10 and high-end market, the majority of sales come from the lower end of the market. To address this segment, AMD has Polaris 11 waiting in the wings. Previous rumours had pointed to Polaris 11 powering the R9 470(X). Today, more rumours have come out about the specifications for the R9 470X graphics card.
According to the source, the Polaris 11 variant powering the R9 470X will feature 1280 shader processors operating at around 1Ghz. Other core specifications include 80 TMUs and 40 ROPs. If this reminds you of another chip, this is basically Pitcairn, the chip that powered the 7870Ghz and R9 270X. There will also be 4GB of 7Gbps GDDR5 VRAM but over a small 256bit bus, giving 112GB/s of bandwidth.
Given that GCN 4.0 is supposed to give major improvements, I could see a 1280 shader GPU performing around the R9 380/380X or even higher. The increase in ROPs would only make sense if performance would be going up significantly. The memory bandwidth seems a bit low but with delta color compression, it might do. The big surprise was clock speed, which I expected to be much higher. Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that this is still a rumour so take it with a giant grain of salt.
