AMD Radeon RX 6600 Confirmed With 14 Gbps Memory

With AMD set to confirm the launch of the Radeon RX 6600 graphics card on October 13th, the early indications and leaks surrounding this new GPU already suggest that, as everyone expected, this is probably going to be a relatively underwhelming entry-level model. In other words, probably nothing to get that overly excited about. Still, a new graphics card is a new graphics card, and rest assured we’ll be ready to tell you exactly what we think of it as soon as the embargo breaks.

In terms of its performance though, what exactly can we expect? Well, following a report via Videocardz, the initial prognosis for the 6600 isn’t good as it’s already been confirmed that it will feature a memory speed of 14 Gbps. With 1,792 Stream processors as well, this does seem to indicate that this is going to be the slowest RDNA2 card to date!

AMD Radeon RX 6600

We can’t honestly pretend that we’re shocked at this news as with the release of the somewhat lacklustre 6600 XT, the only way was down for the 6600. Based on the performance figures leaked so far, however, it does seem that this GPU is going to be pretty mediocre in terms of performance. However, when you look at the specifications, more flags start to be raised about what AMD has done to weaken this GPU.

Put simply, it would appear that the 6600 is just going to be a, across the board, cut-down version of the 6600 XT. Clock speeds down, memory speed down, stream processors down, and perhaps most interestingly, it seems that AMD may have largely achieved this by limiting the power the GPU can receive.

Can This GPU Be a Success?

Despite the relatively benign and potentially disappointing specifications, the Radeon RX 6600 can still be a success, but only if AMD doesn’t repeat one major mistake they made with the XT. Namely, they simply have to price this competitively. The 6600 XT wasn’t a bad graphics card on the surface, but I think many would agree that it was simply too expensive. The worry is that AMD will do this again with the 6600, and, when compared to what Nvidia has (putting the continued abysmal stock situation to one side) it’s hard to tout this as a genuine alternative. Even AMD themselves appear to be marketing this in a performance per watt angle. Definitely not an overly encouraging sign!

With October 13th fast approaching though, we’ll be ready to tell you exactly what we think of this GPU. So be sure to keep an eye on our website and social media channels!
