AMD is finally ready to throw some fresh hardware into the endless battle between Nvidia and AMD for gaming dominance, sure Intel is part of the rumble these days too, but it’s fair to say they’ve got a way to go before they compete on a higher level. While it’s pretty much known at this point that the Nvidia RTX 4090 series will retain its performance crown, all but the dozens of people who can afford such a monstrosity of rendering performance don’t really give much of a damn. The RTX 4080 is a bit more in the realm of realism but AMD is coming in with some very appealing prices and hardware with their new GPUs and that could seriously shift the balance in the market over the next few months.
So while I do have the AMD reference cards here today, we will have further content on AIB models in the next couple of days, comparing cooling performance, overclockability and all that good stuff that really separates each individual model.
Now if you checked out the launch announcement of the cards, you’re probably more than familiar on what’s under the hood, but for a bit of a recap, both these cards are based on the RDNA 3 architecture, which in a bold move, is the worlds first chiplet based GPU, meaning that unlike NVIDIA who use a 4N process node, AMD have plumped for a mixture of 5nm for the GCD or Graphics Compute Die and 6nm for the MCD’s or Memory Cache Die units. In theory, this should provide higher yields and stock should be plentiful, though as we reported last week, there is chatter that Europe may have fewer than 7000 reference GPUs on launch day, so I guess we will wait to see what the outcome is with that but with custom AIB models coming after launch, there may be more stock than first though.
