In a little over a week’s time (November 3rd) AMD is expected to formally announce the launch of its new Radeon 7000 series of graphics cards. Now, admittedly, the Radeon 6000 series didn’t prove to be anywhere near as popular with consumers as the Nvidia 30XX platform (You only have to look at the Steam Hardware Survey to see that!). With the 40XX series looking quite eye-wateringly expensive, however, even I’ll concede that I’ve been giving more and more thought to just jumping over to the Red side of the fence for my next update.
Just how good will Radeon 7000 be though? Well, following a report via Videocardz, rumours have appeared online suggesting that the 7900 XT will feature 20GB of GDDR6 memory (VRAM) and massively faster bus speeds when compared to the 6900 XT or 6950 XT.
Now, ahead of any official announcement from AMD, news like this should, of course, be taken with a grain of salt. The leak source has, however, cited that the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT will see its VRAM generationally increased to 20GB, and more so, moved to a 320-bit bus. While it’s understood that the memory speed would remain at 18 Gbps, this would allow for a vastly faster bandwidth of 720 GB/s which is, roughly speaking, about 20% faster than seen in the 6950 XT.
Now, not moving to GDDR6X is clearly disappointing. At the same time though, sticking with GDDR6 does at least potentially give AMD some advantage where it arguably counts the most at the moment. Namely, MSRPs. – Yes, AMD Radeon 7000 might notably undercut Nvidia’s 40XX series, and while we don’t expect it to perform as well, I can’t help but feel that making a move towards cost-effectiveness rather than outright bleeding edge performance is the smarter move.
Lest we forget though, the Radeon 7900 XT isn’t even expected to be the flagship model. As such, AMD might be saving the GDDR6 for its top-of-the-line 7950 XT.
In a separate piece of news, a leak source has added to the GPU news by suggesting that the AMD Radeon 7000 mobile platform, presumably the 7900M XT, will offer a directly comparable performance to the desktop version of the 6950 XT. And if this is proven true… Well, that would be very impressive indeed.
For the moment though, as noted earlier, take all of this with a pretty hefty grain of salt. If proven true though, November 3rd might be set to be an incredibly interesting day!
